I love South Africa. I think it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
We have 9 provinces and 11 official languages. All 9 provinces in South Africa are worth visiting so my ideal holiday in my own country would have to be a road trip that includes as many of the 9 provinces as possible. It would also have to include lots of adventure activities, coffee shops and spending time in nature.
I will start in Cape Town because that is where I live. In Cape Town alone there are thousands of things to do, but since I can do that anytime I want, I will start my road trip on day one, driving along the spectacular Clarence drive toward Hermanus.
Hermanus – Whale Watching
Here I will spend at least two days. On day one I will go on a whale watching boat trip, eat at Bientang’s Cave – a seafood restaurant that’s carved into a deep old cave that overlooks the Old Harbor and walk along the 10km Cliff Path that has made Hermanus famous for its land-based Whale watching potential.
On day two, I will visit as many wine estates as I possibly can along the Hemel and Aarde Valley, before making my way to Stanford.
Standford – Picnic
In Stanford, I will paddle down the Klein River, visit the Birkenhead brewery, and have a picnic at the Klein River Cheese farm.
Gansbaai – Shark Cage Diving
I will probably spend the night in Stanford and head to Gansbaai the next morning for an early Shark Cage Diving experience.
Cape Agulhas – Most Southern Tip
After the shark cage diving adventure, I will drive to Cape Agulhas, the most southern tip of the African continent and the place where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.
Swellendam – Cookies & Liqueur
From Cape Agulhas I will go to Swellendam. Here I will eat lavender cookies at the Lavender Farm and do a liqueur tasting at one of the Berry farms in Swellendam before heading to Mosselbay.
Mosselbay – Skydiving & Train Ride
I will spend at least one, maybe two nights in Mosselbay and will do some skydiving, visit Seal Island by boat and take the Diaz Express train ride from Hartenbos to Great Brak. I also want to experience the new waterpark at Hartenbos.
Wilderness – Paragliding
My next stop will be at The Map of Africa in Wilderness. Here I will go paragliding, this has always been very high on my bucket list.
Knysna – Elephant Park & Nature Reserve
After Wilderness will go to Knysna, where I will visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve, the Knysna Waterfront, and the stunning Knysna Heads. I will also visit the Knysna Elephant Park before going to Plettenberg Bay where I will stay over.
Plettenberg Bay – Helicopter Flight & Wine Tasting
In Plett I will go on a scenic helicopter flight and visit some more wine farms – this is a new wine route so it will be interesting.
Crags – Elephants, Monkeys, and Birds
Then I will go and explore the Crags and visit the Crags Elephant Sanctuary, Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, and Birds of Eden.
Natures Valley & Bloukrans – Bungee Jump
My next stop will be the unspoiled village of Natures Valley, before heading to Bloukrans Bridge – the highest bridge in Africa, and the highest bungee jump in the world.
Tsitsikamma – Canopy Tour & Blackwater Tubing
After Bloukrans I will go to Tsitsikamma, one of my absolute favourite places in South Africa. Here I will spend a couple of days and go on a canopy tour, do blackwater tubing, snorkel, hike and more.
Jeffrey’s Bay – Surf Lessons
The next stop will be Jeffreys Bay one of the top 5 surfing destinations in the world and so, of course, I will go for a surfing lesson so that I can do some surfing in J’Bay. After Jeffreys, I will go to Port Elizabeth.
Port Elizabeth – Lion Park
Port Elizabeth is a beautiful city with so much to offer so I will spend a couple of days here, doing some exploring, visiting the Seaview Lion Park as well as many other places in and around PE.
Port Alfred & Bathurst – Big Pineapple & Oldest Pub
From PE I will drive towards Port Alfred and Bathurst. Bathurst has the biggest pineapple as well as the oldest pub in South Africa.
East London & Morgan Bay – Horseback Riding
My next stop will be another major city – East London, I might spend a night here and see what this city has to offer before going to Morgan Bay for some horseback riding. With this horseback adventures, you go from surf to savanna, exploring hidden coves and beaches, while experiencing the essence of rural Africa on horseback.
Coffee Bay – Hole in the Wall
Coffee Bay will be my next stop, I have always wanted to stay at the Coffee Shack – a backpackers in Coffee Bay, so I will spend a night here and of course hike to Hole in the Wall.
Port St Johns & Wild Coast Sun – Waterpark
Port St Johns is next and it is another beautiful little coastal town. I will spend a couple of hours here before making my way to the Wild Coast Sun where I will stay over again so that I can spend enough time enjoying their wonderful waterpark.
Ramsgate – Waffles
From the Wild Coast Sun I will make my way towards Margate but first I will stop at the Waffle House in Ramsgate. This is still my favourite waffle place in the whole of South Africa and I can not go to KZN without stopping in Ramsgate for a waffle.
Margate – Childhood Memories
We spent many holidays in Margate when I was a child, so I will stop here and of course in Uvongo where my parents use to have a holiday home.
Oribi Gorge – Zipline & Wild Swing
Then I will make my way to Oribi Gorge. Oribi Gorge has lots to offer – I want to walk across the 80m Suspension Bridge, go on a zip line tour and if my nerves can hold it maybe even try the Wild Swing – the highest swing in the world, it is apparently equivalent to launching off a 55 storey building.
Durban – Ushaka
I will spend a couple of days in Durban, visit some friends and of course spend some time at Ushaka. From Durban, I will drive towards Umhlanga, Ballito and St Lucia.
Hluhluwe – Boat Ride & Beach Safari
My next stop will be Hluhluwe, where I will go on a hippo/croc boat ride and a bush & beach safari. Then it is off to Sodwana.
Sodwana – Scuba Dive
I love Sodwana and have always wanted to go back there to do a scuba diving course. So on my “perfect” holiday, that is exactly what I will do 🙂
After a couple days in Sodwana, I will drive and make quick stops at Pongola, Piet Retief and Dullstroom before spending a couple of days in Sabie.
Sabie – Gods Window
Sabie and surroundings offer so much to do especially if you are a nature lover – stunning waterfalls, lookout points over places like Gods Window, loads of adventure activities and a restaurant with the best views ever.
Kruger National Park is close by, but on this trip, I think I will give it skip since by now I would have already gone on a safari in Hluhluwe and I have been on a couple of safaris in the Kruger National Park in the past.
Hartebeespoort Dam & Sun City
Hartebeespoort dam would be my next stop before going to Johannesburg and Pretoria. I will spend a couple of days here to visit some friends, before going to Sun City for a day or two.
Kimberley – Big Hole
From Sun City I will go to Kimberley and stay a night or two to visit some friends and family and maybe see the Big Hole again.
Augrabies – Waterfalls
From Kimberley, I will drive to Upington, stay a night in Augrabies to see the waterfalls.
Langebaan – Kitesurfing Lessons
From Augrabies, I’ll pass by Springbok, Vredendal, Klawer, Lamertsbaai, Saldanha, and finally spend some time in Langebaan again. Here I will go for Kitesurfing lessons.
Atlantis – Sandboarding
On my way back to Cape Town I will go sand boarding on the Dunes of Atlantis.
This is just a summary of the places I would like to visit and some of the things I would like to do. To go on a road trip like this would involve a lot of planning, so if I had to seriously start planning I’m sure a lot on this trip will change, but this is more or less the type of holiday that I would love to have in South Africa.
The Best Part
The best part of it all is that this is not even close to all the wonderful places and things that South Africa has to offer, this is just one road trip – there are so many other road trips I still want to go on as well, but this is my main one.
